Surviving the First Cold
How to survive the first cold
MY son caught his first cold around 4 months, and his second cold about a month later. Now this was not during the pandemic that were currently facing with COVID-19, so times were different. But, as a first time mama the following thoughts immediately went through my mind…
WHO GAVE HIM THIS COLD?!
HOW DID HE CATCH IT, I KEEP HIM I A BUBBLE?!
THIS COLD IS THE END HE MIGHT DIE FROM THIS!
After a good long panic, I called the pediatrician and made an EMERGENCY 911 MY 4 MONTH OLD HAS A COLD appointment - literal panic talking to the scheduler, she was not impressed. When we got him in, the pediatrician was literally like, um, he has a cold. hes fine. feed him, keep him upright and use the nose frida. k bye.
The moral of all of the above is, colds happen, to all babies. The first cold is going to be tough on you and on baby - this is all new! But, you and baby will survive and live to fight another cold, most likely very soon.
To make things a little easier I did a lot of trial and errors on products that would help ease cold symptoms for my son, some worked, some did nothing, so these are my recommendations for what did work, and what I now keep in my cold arsenal.
Nose Frida
I’ve mentioned this product in a few blogs now, and that’s simply because it works really well for lots of snot.
Boogie Wipes
These are great wipes to use on babies nose, or if you need to transfer what you just sucked out in the nose frida- yes I am aware it sounds disgusting, and it is.
Honest chest rub
I cannot recommend this product enough! Unlike some chest rubs with harsh chemicals and smells the Honest chest rub is all natural and helps baby breath at night. I always have this on hand, and recommend to all my friends.
Halo Wedge Insert
This is designed specifically for the Halo Bassinet, it helps baby sit a bit upright so the snot isn’t going straight down their throat. This would be great for re-flux babies as well!
Infant Tylenol
This isn’t specifically for cold, I still use this for teething, for big head bonks (yes there are MANY) and fevers! You should always have this on hand. There is Grape and Cherry, while I as a child would vomit for any Cherry flavored medicine apparently my son hates grape and loves cherry …. I blame his father.
Honest Hand Sanitizer
I take this EVERYWHERE, and I have multiples. I use this after before and after diaper changes, when I am out and about and really just everyday for general hand sanitation. It is extremely important to always keep your hands washed and clean, especially when baby is sick.
Frida Humidifier
This helps baby breathe better at night and makes sure they don’t get too dried out. My son has a molekule running in his room 24/7 and I can tell the difference in his boogers (YES I TRACK THESE THINGS) when we have the humidifier running with the molekule vs. just the molekule running.
Ooogie Bear
(basically a nose picker)
Your baby will hate this, BUT if your child has sticky boogers like my son has been getting lately, and LOTS of them (there are so many). Then this thing will help you tremendously. Basically it allows you to swipe their nose (nicely) and get out sticky boogers that are just not budging with the nose frida.
These are just some basics that I consistently use, and I am sure there is WAY more out there. But when mama friends ask, these are always my go to recommendation.
Good luck mama, you are doing GREAT!
